Peter Petrelli is an evolved human from New York City. He is the brother of Nathan Petrelli. He became a nurse in April 2006.

Peter possesses the ability of Empathic Mimicry, and as a result, can naturally duplicate the abilities of other gifted people he has encountered. Initially it was thought that close proximity to his "donor" was required for Peter to access an ability, however, it has since become apparent that once received, he can recall these abilities on demand. It appears that Peter can manifest any ability possessed by any gifted individual he has ever encountered, whether he has previously used it or not.

Peter believes that he must summon some emotional connection to an individual in order to tap into their abilities (for example Sylar's telekinesis surfaced in a moment of rage when attacked by Claude). Despite this, on occasion he has been surprised by his own abilities and had to think for a moment to recall whose power he is duplicating. An example of this is his "time travel" into the future.

Peter is believed to have absorbed the following abilities (listed with their apparent donors):

Furthermore, he could have absorbed any power Sylar had absorbed at the time Peter had met him, though it is possible that Peter can only absorb an ability that has been manifested while he is in contact with one of these "special people."

Peter recently lost all of his abilities due to close contact with his father

Peter, amidst the destruction of the Pinehearst Company's headquarters, took some of the power bestowing formula and has now regained his power. However, so far it would appear that he can only acquire one ability at-a-time and only through physical contact. Once he touches someone new, he looses the old ability.

Anomalistic abilities are the result of the activation of normally dormant DNA sequences within the supposedly "junk DNA" that every human has. Living cells and DNA strings are electromagnetic factories, as each cell generates an EM field and the DNA inside a cell influences the exact make-up of that field. The EM fields of living cells can essentially carry the information of the exact DNA inside it's core. Peter possesses an electromagnetic "biometric aura" that interacts with the EM field of another evolved human and through electromagnetic induction, a feedback effect causes the information of their active junk DNA to activate the exact same DNA sequence in Peter's genetic structure, awakening the special ability that particular sequence endows. That's how he permanently gains the anomalistic ability of an evolved human that is in his immediate vicinity.

Anomalistic abilities are the result of a neuro-electrically created electromagnetic life form that permeates an evolved human's body and after taking signals from the evolved human's psyche and other physiological messengers alters the person's physiology in way that will imbue them with an ability that might be useful to that particular evolved human in their daily life or at least at the precise time of their manifestation. Peter possesses a bio-electrical "biometric aura", which allows him to duplicate evolved human anomalistic abilities. When Peter's biometric aura interacts with the EM field life form of another evolved human, an electronic digital information transfer instantaneously gives Peter's own EM field life form an intrinsic understanding of the entire physiological workings of the other evolved human's ability. The EM field life form then immediately alters Peter's physiology to possess that ability. That's how he permanently gains the anomalistic ability of an evolved human that is in his immediate vicinity.

Exposure to a large number of abilities in a short time can cause Peter's system to shut down as his physiology struggles to adapt to the rapid changes. It should be noted that a duplicated ability does not necessarily come with the donor's degree of practice or control over that ability.

It is also possible that Peter could destroy the world by encountering an unstable power.
