Consumerism and Evolution
From Activating Evolution
Some experts believe that consumerism is way of gauging the evolutionary index of the world (see Gaia theory). They believe that the level of choices in the market that the community buys is related to the different choices of anomalistic abilities and that the products an individual buys might be an indication of what anamolistic ability they would manifest.
Scientific literature has documented many cases of deleterious mutations that require the individual to refrain from ingestion of a given nutrient. Phenylketonuria is a potentially fatal genetic disease where a newborn must abstain from foods rich in phenylalanine or they will build up a toxic byproduct in the brain and eventually die. Those that maintain a diet deficient in the substance will live a life close to expectancy. On the other hand, it has been long know that those suffering from true Attention Deficit Disorder tend to respond well to treatment with amphetamine-based medications (even high levels of caffeine). The addition of this to the "diet" has shown beneficial effects. It has been postulated that those with anomalistic abilities may, as a result of their trait, require unique forms of nutrition to maintain themselves in the face of unique energy expenditures. In such a way could their patterns of consumerism identify them as special. However, one would need to know what additive, if any, was necessary for any individual trait. The compilation of such a database is a daunting task indeed.

Some say that private organizations can find "evolved" people by what they buy. That when given access to a wide variety of similar products, patterns of consumption appear. These patterns often say more about the consumer than they do about the products themselves.
Research could be used to detect buying patterns that identify people in this unique demographic. Once identified, the temptation to use these people and their abilities would be overwhelming.
Different organizations might use different methods to control these people once they are identified. One organization might choose to deal with them directly, by recruiting or hiring those deemed valuable and by eliminating those too dangerous or uncontrollable to be useful. Another group might attempt to manipulate these people in a more subtle manner, through the opening and closing opportunities available to them.
That privately owned companies search for and hire evolved persons to use in commercial ventures is an established fact. The more subtle manipulation of these people is conjecture at this point.
[edit] Manipulation
Other "experts" might argue that creating theories about evolution and its association with consumerism might be a very clever plot to increase profit for proponents of pseudo-scientific literature that is, at best, half-true. Most of the educated population will appear at the lower end of the natural binomial curve (many standard deviations away) that can be used to interpret the "believablility" of a relationship between buying patterns and the existance of a particular human "super" trait. While those at the peak of the curve will most likely represent the less intellectual of our species capable of grasping the concept. The artificial selection being employed to further propagate the traits characterized by these less intelligent, "gullible morons", as they are commonly referred to, is an interesting and simultaneously frustrating concept. Perhaps, with some critical paradigm shifts, the human race will see the extinction of the "idiocy" trait and an emergence of a selection towards the more rational and sane individuals within our species.
