Born Gabriel Gray, the son of a watchmaker always dreamed of bigger things, of being "special". Adopting the name "Sylar," he becomes a serial murderer, targeting evolved humans with abilities, but doesn't discriminate against killing anybody who stands in his way. Having the power of intuitive aptitude, Sylar is able to see how things work and use that to take the special powers of others after killing them. The FBI has categorized Sylar as a suspected serial killer. His suspected victims are sometimes seen with their heads sliced open horizontally at the center of their skull and their brain removed. Other victims are pinned to wall, frozen, or beaten. Sylar is hunted by the FBI, but has successfully eluded and taunted them, growing stronger and more powerful with each victim. Sylar is also known to have used the FBI to gain access to other with abilities in order to take their abilities (see Ted)

Sylar was born with the ability to intuitively understand how things work and has used it to gain the Anomalistic Abilities of others. The following is a list of abilities Sylar is known to have taken, it is possible he could have many more unknown abilities.
(It is uncertain if Sylar has gained Candice's power of illusion, as his base power and all of the abilities he had taken were nullified by the Shanti virus when he killed her.)

It has been proven that Sylar actually removes his victims brains to see "how they work", but it is unknown what he does with the brains after. Noah Bennet stated that Sylar had ingested foreign DNA to help gain powers, so it was suspected that Sylar eats the brains as a sort of "boost" that helps him gain abilities. this isb disproved after he told Claire bennet that that would be "disgusting". Rather,Sylar looks into the brains of his victims to see how their powers are activated, and then he ultimately reconfigures his own brain patterns to unlock their powers. It has also been suggested that Sylar is actually an empath like Peter Petrelli but this theory has been discarded by several on the basis that he has been around several with abilities including Claire Bennett and has not taken on their ability like Peter.
[edit] Current Whereabouts
Sylar was under the lock and key of the Company, however it was discovered that he escaped after being declared dead and coming back to life, and then using his other abilities to incapacitate Noah and leave. How he regained his abilities is unknown, as is his ability to come back from death.
After that, he went to new York to steal more powers. But his reign of terror was put off by Hiro Nakamura when he stabbed Sylar with his sword. About to die, Sylar was saved by Candice. When he woke up, he had lost all of his powers because of the Shanti virus. He then stole antibodies infused with the regenerative blood of Claire Bennet, a cure for the particular strain of the Shanti Virus he had been injected with.
Elle Bishop attempted to apprehend him, however she was unsuccessful. She did, however, save the lives of Suresh, Walker and Herrera in the process.
