He is said to have defeated the notorious White Beard at the battle of the twelve swords. He is also famous for his quest to find the hidden fortress. He had training from a Dragon that made him a Kensei or sword saint. He single handedly saved Japan from white beard and allowed the nation an era of peace. The Dragon demanded Kensei give his one true love, the daughter of a blacksmith. Kensei cut out his heart and offered it to the dragon, saying "all my love is in here. Take it." The dragon reincarnated him for his heroism.

Hiro Nakamura, who accidentally time traveled to the time period, discovered that Takezo Kensei was actually an opportunistic mercenary who employed decoys to distract an army while he used a crossbow.

Kensei was also a very crude and rude man, bordering on being a drunkard--not the Hero Hiro had heard of. Because of this Hiro set out to instruct him in the ways of being a Hero, discovering, along the way, that Kensei had regenerative powers.

While initially successful, Hiro's budding romance with Kensei's princess caused Kensei to snap and help White Beard's army. At this point, Hiro was revealed to be the true Kensei, and the princess vowed to tell the story as Hiro had learned it, ensuring time continuity.

It should also be noted that Kensei possessed a sword which apparently helped him to focus his powers. It's rumored he found it in the snow atop a mountain.

The man that Hiro knew as Takezo Kensei vowed with his seemingly last breath that he wouldn't rest until he killed all that Hiro loved, leading to Hiro's attempt to blow him up with all of White Beards guns.

After returning to the present, Hiro learned of his fathers death and traveled back to save him, here he learned that his father's murder was done by none other than Takezo Kensei - alias Adam Monroe.

[edit] Additional Information

Adam Monroe escaped with Peter Petrelli several weeks ago, and has since gone missing. Monroe, along with both Petrelli's, Hiro Nakamura and Matt Parkman were caught on Company video surveillance just prior to Nakamura vanishing with Monroe.

It appears that Monroe was after Strain 138 of the Shanti Virus, although he dropped the vial containing the strain as Nakamura reached for him. It can be assumed that Nakamura has done the Company a favor and disposed of Monroe, however this is currently unconfirmed.
