In addition to the positive effects mentioned above, the negative side effects will be a cornucopia of mutation-gone-wild. Spontaneous generation of extra limbs and organs, mental depression at an extremely violent and unprecedented level, super-criminals, over-population, extreme cancers which can kill overnight, disease that spreads uncontrolled and deformed births are just a taste of what will come. Monsters which were just the stuff of science fiction will roam the earth, terrorizing the 'normal' population.
This will eventually give rise to the 'Genetics Wars' where mutant freaks will be hunted and destroyed as vermin. Walled-in cities of 'normals' will send out patrols to seek and destroy the mutants. Even positive mutations will be looked upon as a poison to humanity and be targeted for elimination.
The world as we know it will be forever changed. We don't have the proper tools to play God . . . but it may already be too late to stop.

Since this is supposed to be Mohinder's site, we really should put in a section on the actual theory of evolution, namely the Modern Synthesis. He'd know it and understand it.
